Welcome to the Institute for Hand & Arm Surgery, a state of the art orthopedic practice dedicated to the treatment of patients with injuries and medical conditions involving the hand, elbow, shoulder and peripheral nerve. The Institute was established in 2015 with locations in Madison and Harrison, NJ. Our physicians, certified hand therapists, and staff are committed to providing exceptional care in a patient friendly environment.

Our goal is to deliver comprehensive treatment for patients with hand, arm and peripheral nerve conditions. We treat many ailments from the common to the most complex. We employ advanced surgical (including Wide Awake Local Anesthesia No Tourniquet – WALANT) and non-surgical techniques to fully treat people from the shoulder to the fingertip. Our expertise includes the care of fractures, peripheral neuropathies (e.g. carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, and nerve lacerations), arthritis, overuse syndromes (e.g. tennis elbow, rotator cuff tears), joint pain and deformities, and those conditions requiring tendon repairs and arthroscopic procedures. Our highly specialized training and experience also allow us to treat complicated disorders, such as brachial plexus injuries, thoracic outlet syndrome, and those requiring complex elbow and shoulder reconstructions, and finger re-attachments. We care for patients of all ages, including infants and children.

  • Doctor was very knowledgeable, and courteous. Excellent bedside manner. Helpful staff for office and surgery center. Recommend this doctor highly.

  • Thank you for the excellent care provided, Much Appreciated!

  • Dr. Tan saved our son's arm. He had been playing on the monkey bars and fell off, breaking his arm badly at the elbow. However, unknown to us, the break had been so bad that it had severed the entire blood flow to his hand. Dr. Tan arrived immediately at the hospital and realized that the artery and nerve had also been severely injured. Typically, a vascular surgeon would have been required to treat the blood vessel, but in one of the luckiest events of our life, Dr. Tan had an expertise in both orthopedics AND microvascular surgery. He was able to fix both the break in the bone and restore the blood flow to the hand without any loss of time. Our son now has full range of movement and full use of his arm. We are so lucky to have had Dr. Tan as our doctor.

  • We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to you and your team for taking care of our son Sean. I’m sure you can understand the fear and anxiety we were faced with and your knowledge, sense of concern and thorough explanation put us at ease. Sean is our whole life and it is comforting to know that he is under the care of someone so knowledgeable and more so has compassion. Thank you so very much!

  • Your brilliant surgical techniques and expertise and excellent post-operative care have resulted in the restoration of health to my left wrist. Normal functioning and strength have returned. Indeed, I am at a loss of how to pay tribute to not only your genius as a surgeon, but to your warmth, compassion, and kindness as a health-care provider. I wish there were better ways to express our thanks for the precious gift you gave to me.

  • Thanks so much for taking care of Joe – although he’s been cranky with that cast…it did give him some new joke material! Thanks for help us and doing such a great job.

  • Thank you so very much for your expertise, time, caring, thoughtfulness and support you have shown to me. I can’t thank you enough for helping me with my problems with my left arm. God Bless you and your family always.

  • I wanted to thank you for being such a wonderful doctor. I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to answer our questions prior to surgery, as well as, so patiently returning our phone call the night of and the morning after the surgery. Words cannot express how happy I am that you were my father’s doctor. Thank you.

  • I wanted to express my deepest thanks and gratitude for saving my hand back in 2010. I feared the worst and you brought my hand back better than I could have ever imagined. Thank You!

  • I will be forever grateful to the powers that be that led me to you when I so desperately needed help. I was extremely frightened and worried about the loss of use of my elbow, arm and hand. Thanks to your great skill, I now have the functions back. It is difficult to express my deep gratitude to you. May you continue for many years helping others. Thank you and God Bless.

  • This year my wife and I have been blessed with two very special gifts that have changed our lives! None of this would have been possible without your wonderful gift as an amazing doctor and surgeon. Thanks to you I can hold both of my children forever! You are an incredible person and I’m eternally grateful for what you have done.

  • We can’t even begin to express our gratitude to you. What you did for our son is beyond words. You have made Michael so happy to get back to baseball! He has a glove on his hand and cleats on his feet again! Thank you so very much!!
